Shamo Abasov

(1955 - 2014)

Shamo Abasov is a real artist of Absheron who sees the world in completely unexpected and incomprehensible ways. He is able to play the customary forms, transforming them beyond recognition, while commonplace in his paintings is reborn as the grotesque associative array of symbols and hidden meanings.
The artist passed serious schools as the graduate of the art school named A.Azimzade and Leningrad higher school of art named after Mukhin, where he received professional education and mastered the skill of drawing, composition and painting. Shamo Abbasov carries a very multi-faceted potential. He worked with ceramics and wood, which is also reflected in a certain approach when creating shapes and volumes, using local color in a contrast, sonorous combination.
Shamo Abasov felt deeply the originality of the Azerbaijani national colors in finely captured characters and comic situations. The relationships between his heroes feature the painfully familiar images of Apsheron and the people residing on this amazing peninsula. Even the traditional feast of Baku under a pomegranate tree in his paintings conveys the feeling of not the fleeting but the completeness of joyful moments of life, understanding that it is impossible to achieve such an "incredible lightness of being” without a certain carelessness.
